Alsa-utils configure problem

Hi gang,
I trying to compile alsa-utils-0.5.5.  I get the following suspicious
messages from configure:
checking for initscr in -lncurses... (cached) no
checking for initscr in -lcurses... (cached) no

Then, when I run "make install" I get a bunch of undefined ncurses
functions in alsamixer.c

I just rebuilt ncurses-4.2, so I'm not sure why configure script isn't
locating it?  My libncurses* files are in /usr/lib.

Thanks for your help/suggestions.
