Kernel 2.4.3

I am trying to patch a kernel version 2.4.3 and I was getting the error message
binary operator expected from the install script.  I also got the errors:

Patching files [p./install: ${writeloc//^/\/}: bad substitution
] done.
Copying files [c./install: ${writeloc//^/\/}: bad substitution
] done.

I fixed the binary operator error and some of the files were installed in the
source tree but when I run make config I do not get the speakup option anywhere in
the choices.

Anyone got any suggestions?
